2615 Rescued from Fishing Line Entanglement

During our May 2024 dolphin health assessments, we conducted a disentanglement on a 4-year-old male dolphin. 2615, is a calf seen infrequently in our study area but we know him to be the son of F261, age 49.

The entanglement badly disfigured his dorsal fin and while we were able to remove the line and release him with his mother, the disfigurement could increase the probability of more line entanglement in the future.

This rescue serves as reminder to “Stow it, Don’t Throw it” — that is, to ensure that you discard used fishing line in a closed container so it cannot blow out of your boat and also to retrieve any line that gets caught on mangroves or pilings.
